The Shield of Achilles is an international, peer-reviewed journal in the fields of the humanities, covering literature, linguistics, history, ethnology, anthropology, and ethnomusicology.
The journal publishes original and review scientific papers, fieldwork and source materials, book reviews, interviews, bibliographies, and chronicles.
The publication aims to contribute to the development of the humanities through scientific inquiry.

The title of the journal refers to the 18th book of Homer’s Iliad, in which Hephaestus forges the shield of Achilles. The description of Achilles’ shield is the most famous example of ekphrasis in Western art. In the detailed depiction of the shield, the entire material world is portrayed: the heavenly dome, water surfaces, life in the city, the countryside, in both wartime and peacetime contexts. Around the metaphor of Achilles’ shield as a microcosm, which also refers to the potential of our knowledge about the world, the concept of the journal is woven.

The journal welcomes scientific results from experts, professionals, and graduate students on aspects of the aforementioned humanities fields, addressed from both traditional and contemporary, as well as the latest theoretical perspectives. The journal particularly encourages interdisciplinary approaches in study. It also publishes special thematic issues and thematic sections within regular issues, which are edited by guest editors.

The Shield of Achilles is published once a year in both print and electronic formats. It is available in open access. The journal does not charge publication fees, and the articles are not financially compensated.
